Where to Learn More About Indigenous Communities in Maryland

Daniel Firehawk Abbott is a descendant of the Nanticoke tribe on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He is a living history interpreter and designer of the Chicone Village Longhouse and Garden at Handsell in Dorchester County, Maryland.
Students and educators can continue to learn about Indigenous culture and history by reaching out to the local Indigenous communities in your area. Many local tribes hold public events where you can learn about cultural traditions. You may also read or listen to oral histories of those still living. They have passed down stories and traditions that can help you understand Indigenous Maryland in both the past and the present.
In the following video, tribal consultants provide suggestions for how to learn more about Indigenous cultures.
