The Ships’ Journey

A map shows the route of the Ark and Dove across the Atlantic Ocean from 1633–1634.
Essential Question:
In 1633, the colonists were ready to set sail. With the dream of starting a new settlement of religious tolerance and opportunity, 140 passengers sailed on the Ark and Dove to the New World. They would establish the new settlement known as Mary Land.
Listen to the firsthand, primary account of Father White describing the journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
Work with a partner to read and discuss the following questions.
- How would you describe the journey?
- Which ship was larger and therefore carried most of the supplies and passengers?
- Which ship did not have any passengers?
- What was the intended purpose of the Dove?
As you heard from Father White’s journal entry, the journey across the Atlantic Ocean was a difficult one. It took four months for both ships to leave England and arrive in the New World.
