In this lesson, you learned that the French and British both sought control over the Ohio River Valley. This led to the French and Indian War. The British colonists thought the Ohio River Valley belonged to them because the King of England granted all the land from the East Coast of North America to the Pacific Ocean. So how did the British colonists move west to fight the French and make their claims?

The Allegheny Mountains were an obstacle to expanding to the Ohio River Valley. At the time, the quickest way for settlers to travel was by river. However, because of the mountain range, the British colonists had limited access to rivers. So how did the British colonists move west?
