Between 1607 and 1803, Native Americans, the British, and the French all had their own reasons for wanting to control the land west of the Appalachian Mountains. This area was known as the Ohio River Valley. There were millions of acres of rich forestland and farmland. Settlement in this area played a significant role in developing the American frontier.
