Relative Frequency and Probability

If skill is removed, the chance of making a shot into a trash can is 50%. You either make it or you don’t. If 100 balls of paper were thrown into the trash can, we would expect to land about half into the trash. If 500 balls of paper were thrown into the trash can, we would expect to land about 250 balls into the trash. If 10 balls of paper were thrown into the trash can, we would expect to land 5 balls into the trash can.

Thus, it comes as no surprise that both classes came very close to a relative frequency of landing 5 out of 10 balls of paper into the trash can. If we know the long-range probability of an event, we can predict the approximate relative frequency.

Congratulations! You have completed this activity.
