From Mars to Mardi Gras: A Lesson in Generalizations

mixing batter

Despite his sister’s initial comment, Carl continues to make the cake. Using a spoon, he mixes the cake batter until all the ingredients are evenly mixed together.

Now, his sister takes a taste. “That is much better! This cake is going to taste great! You have all the right ingredients.”

This comment is a correct generalization. The sample taste is representative of the entire bowl, in that it contains all the ingredients that make up the population of ingredients placed into the bowl. Carl can use this representative sample to conclude that his cake will be awesome!
