But great writers stand apart from all others. Edgar Allan Poe is one of these special people, recognized as one of the greatest and most influential writers in American history. By his death at age 40, Poe not only wrote some of the most memorable short stories and poetry, but is credited with inventing entire new genres of storytelling, including horror tales and the detective story.
