Foundations of Gifted and Talented Education

Description: Foundations of Gifted and Talented Education is a four-credit CPD survey course that addresses gifted and talented education history, theories, pedagogy, identification tools and processes, and instructional models. The course also provides participants with a glimpse into the unique learning characteristics, as well as the social and emotional needs of gifted and talented students. This includes those who are twice-exceptional and students in historically underrepresented groups.

Fraction Fundamentals: Part B
Dates: February 19 - April 21

Description: This online course will continue to build upon the foundational concepts of fractions that were introduced and examined in Fraction Fundamentals: Part A. Participants will begin by examining and discussing a model comparing fractions and reasoning with fractions applicable to grades 3-5. Following these initial lessons, the remainder of the course will focus on fraction operations. In addition to written assignments, discussion posts, and readings, participants will complete a final project that reflects all course activities.

Middle School Ratios and Proportional Relationships
Dates: February 19 - April 21

Description: This in-depth course assists middle school mathematics teachers in planning and delivering effective instruction on ratios and proportional relationships in their Grades 6 - 8 classrooms. Participants closely examine the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards, the corresponding Framework, and Universal Design for Learning—and then revisit materials they currently use. In addition, participants analyze and develop assessment items to check for student understanding and guide instructional practice.

Online Teaching in Maryland (OTM)
Dates: February 19 - April 21
Credit: 3 MSDE CPD Credits #14-00-45
Course Fee: $225 plus nonrefundable $25 registration fee with a 3% bank processing fee.
Description: This updated online course prepares participants to facilitate online courses for students and other educators. Readings, hands-on activities, asynchronous and synchronous discussions,role-playing activities, and other activities support learning the pedagogy behind successful online learning, teaching, and assessment. Practice in the course’s "Sandbox" helps participants apply their knowledge and utilize the course features of the Learning Management System.
Prerequisite: It is recommended that participants have had at least one online experience.

Helping All Students Succeed in PE -- and the IEP Process

Current Best Practices in School Library Media: A Book Study
Dates: February 19 - March 24

Description: The 2017 National School Library Standards detail practices to empower School Library Media Specialists to transform teaching and learning. These standards are the basis for the new Maryland School Library Media Standards for Learners, Librarians, and Libraries. They enable school librarians to influence and lead in their schools, districts, and the state and to develop plans that meet today’s educational landscape for learners, school librarians, and school libraries. Research shows that effective school libraries, led by certificated school librarians, have a positive impact on student learning, reading and achievement.

This book study is designed to guide participants in an in-depth investigation of current best practices in School Library Media services. Participants will read, discuss, and journal to gain familiarity with ways in which these standards support teaching and learning through the profession and in the school library.
