Raw corn cobs with leaves and husk
Objective
Explain how everyday materials come from natural resources.
What did the corn say when it received a compliment? Aw, shucks!
After this lesson you may want to compliment corn, the next farmer you see, or your teacher for these awesome facts you’re about to learn. A member of the grass family, corn is native to the Americas and has been used since ancient times. The cultivated corn that we commonly see today is known to have existed for at least 3,000 years in the Southwestern United States. Many different Native American tribes used corn (also known as maize) for food and other purposes. Along with beans and squash, corn was considered sacred by some Pueblo tribes of the Southwest.
Farmers, scientists, and consumers like you have helped corn evolve into many other products. As you learn, think about which of the products you use every day may be made from corn.
