Each challenge includes three thinking questions to guide students as they analyze sources for evidence.

Primary Source Analysis - Question

Observation and reflection open the door to the next phase, Question. This is when students think like a historian and use a critical eye to evaluate the source and take note of aspects that are unfamiliar.

Students learn to source a historical document by exploring new answers to the 5W questions - Who? What? Where? When? Why? - such as:

  • Who made this source, and who was the audience?
  • What type of the source is this?
  • Where was the source created, and where can I find it now?
  • I wonder why, and when it was created?

Primary source analysis allows students to practice critical thinking and evaluate different viewpoints. Listen as Lee Ann Potter discusses the relationship between students asking questions and students learning to corroborate sources to understand diverse perspectives.
