A worm’s eye view of trees next to buildings in a city
Grade 5
Did you know it takes a lot of teamwork to grow the trees that help protect our environment? Every step is important from collecting seeds to planting and caring for young trees. Natural resource planners and nursery managers play a big role in this process. They do more than just plant trees—they carefully select seeds, study how different species grow, and ensure each tree can reach its full height and strength. The efforts of people who care for trees make our communities greener, support wildlife, and improve the world around us.
Teacher's Guide and Related Standards
Students will be able to identify the earth systems involved in growing trees from seeds.
Making Models
Models are used in science to simplify complex phenomena. Models can make large things, like a solar system, smaller. They can also make small things like atoms, larger. Models can also be used to study dangerous things, like tornados.or schools to assist the lab with monitoring bird populations across North America.
A System of Systems
The Earth can support life because of a series of interacting systems. Think of the water cycle. It takes the air, water, soil, rocks, trees, and even people to keep the water we have moving around the planet.
Parts Working Together
A system is a series of parts that interact and work towards a common purpose. Think of a bicycle. Each part by itself does nothing. It is not until they are assembled, and someone starts pedaling that a bicycle works.
