Slide 1

Transformations

Drag and drop each of the following transformations into the correct columns.

Description of work area:
On the left are six pairs of transformations. On the right is a table with three columns, titled “Rotation,” “Reflection” and “Translation.” The pairs of transformations on the left are to be dragged into the appropriate column. Each column has two rows so that two pairs of transformations will be placed into each column.

Slide 2

Reflections, translations and rotations preserve shape and size. In other words, the image, defined as the figure produced by a transformation, formed by a translation, rotation or transformation, is congruent to the pre-image, defined as the original figure prior to a transformation.

Congruent means two objects are exactly the same shape and size. They have equal side lengths and equal angles.

Examine these sets of images.

Why don’t they show a reflection, translation or rotation? (a show answer button appears after this question)

Description of images: Pentagon F prime G prime H prime I prime J prime is the same shape as Pentagon FGHIJ, but Pentagon F prime G prime H prime I prime J prime is larger than Pentagon FGHIJ.

Hexagon J prime K prime L prime M prime N prime O prime is the same shape as Hexagon JKLMNO, but Hexagon J prime K prime L prime M prime N prime O prime is larger than hexagon JKLMNO.

Triangle OPQ is the same shape as Triangle O prime P prime Q prime, but the triangles are different sizes.

Answer: It’s because each of these sets has an image that is not the same size as the pre-image. The images are not congruent.
