Tree Diagrams

The following tree diagram will show all the possible gender outcomes in the birth of triplets. Each child has two possibilities. The child will be either a boy or a girl.

This part of the diagram shows the possible genders of the first child in a set of triplets.

Diagram description: The tree diagram shows one initial point. From this point, there are two segments, or branches. The top branch is labeled girl. The bottom branch is labeled boy.

Slide 2

The first child in a set of triplets could be a girl or a boy. The second child will also be a boy or a girl. Click the tree diagram to show the possibilities with a second child.

Diagram description: The tree diagram shows one initial point. From this point, there are two segments, or branches. The top branch is labeled girl. The bottom branch is labeled boy. After clicking, two branches appear at the end of these first two branches. From the first girl branch, the two new branches are labeled. One is labeled girl and the other is labeled boy. From the first boy branch, two new branches are labeled. One is labeled girl and the other is labeled boy.

Slide 3

So far, the tree diagram shows the outcomes for the first two children.

The possible outcomes for the first two children are:

Girl, Girl

Girl, Boy

Boy, Girl

Boy, Boy

Diagram description: The tree diagram shows one initial point. From this point, there are two segments, or branches. The top branch is labeled girl. The bottom branch is labeled boy. Two branches appear at the end of these first two branches. From the first girl branch, the two branches are labeled. One is labeled girl and the other is labeled boy. From the first boy branch, two branches are labeled. One is labeled girl and the other is labeled boy. The outcomes are marked at the end of these four branches.

Slide 4
There is a 1 out of 4 chance, or one quarter of a chance, that the first two babies will both be girls. There is a 2 out of 4 chance, or two quarters equals one half of a chance, that there will be one girl and one boy.

The outcomes are Girl, Girl; Girl, Boy; Boy, Girl; Boy, Boy.

What is the probability of the first two babies being boys? Type the fraction in the blanks.

Description of quiz area: Two blanks appear. Enter the numerator of the fraction in the top blank, and the denominator of the fraction in the bottom blank.

Correct answer: ΒΌ or one-fourth

Slide 5

Now click the tree diagram to show all the possible gender outcomes in the birth of triplets.

Diagram description: The tree diagram shows one initial point. From this point, there are two segments, or branches. The top branch is labeled ‘girl’. The bottom branch is labeled boy. Two branches appear at the end of these first two branches. From the first girl branch, the two branches are labeled. One is labeled girl and the other is labeled boy. From the first ‘boy’ branch, two branches are labeled. One is labeled girl and the other is labeled boy. From the ends of each of these branches are two more branches. This makes a total of eight new branches. Each of these branches is labeled alternately girl and boy.

Here are some of the possible outcomes for the triplets:

Girl, Girl, Girl

Girl, Girl, Boy

Girl, Boy, Girl

Girl, Boy, Boy

Select the remaining possible outcomes.

Description of Quiz area: A list of potential outcomes appears. Select all that apply as remaining outcomes represented by the tree diagram.

  1. Girl, Girl, Girl
  2. Girl, Girl, Boy
  3. Boy, Girl, Girl
  4. Boy, Boy, Boy
  5. Girl, Boy, Girl
  6. Girl, Boy, Boy
  7. Boy, Girl, Boy
  8. Boy, Boy, Girl

Correct Answer: C, D, G, H

What is the theoretical probability that a set of triplets will be all girls?

Description of quiz area: Two blanks appear. Enter the numerator of the fraction in the top blank, and the denominator of the fraction in the bottom blank.

Correct answer: 1/8 or one-eighth

What is the theoretical probability that a set of triplets will have at least one boy?
Description of quiz area: Two blanks appear. Enter the numerator of the fraction in the top blank, and the denominator of the fraction in the bottom blank.

Correct answer: 7/8 or seven-eighths

Slide 9

There is a much higher chance that a set of triplets will have a boy and a girl, and not be all the same gender.
