Functional Relationships and Tosses

Below is a set of three graphs. One of the graphs has been selected. Five clues are given that lead to which graph has been selected. Click each rectangle to reveal each clue. When you are ready to guess which graph the clues are describing, click the graph. Try to guess before revealing all five clues.

Description of Graphs: Each coordinate grid has the x-axis and y-axis extending from negative ten to ten, in increments of one. Each coordinate displays a different graph.
Graph A: A parabola that crosses the x-axis at approximately negative two and negative eight. Its maximum is at approximately (negative five, eight).
Graph B: A line with a negative slope, crossing the x-axis at approximately negative two, and the y-axis at negative four.
Graph C: A circle with center at the origin and a radius of approximately 8 units.

Description of work area: Below the graphs are five clue boxes. Each box is clicked to reveal the following clues:

Clue 1: The graph is a function.

Clue 2: The graph crosses the x-axis at –2.

Clue 3: The graph decreases.

Clue 4: The graph is linear.

Clue 5: The graph is continuous; it has no holes or gaps.

Click the graph to select which graph the clues are referring to.

Correct answer: B

Below is another set of three graphs.

Graph A: A line with a positive slope. It crosses the x-axis at two, and the y-axis at negative six.
Graph B: A parabola that crosses the x-axis at approximately one and seven. It has a minimum at approximately (four, negative eight).
Graph C: A piece-wise linear function. The first piece is a line with a positive slope extending from negative infinity to the point (one, nine). The second piece is a horizontal line extending from (one, five) to positive infinity.

Description of work area: Below the graphs are five clue boxes. Each box is clicked to reveal the following clues:

Clue 1: The graph is not a function.

Clue 2: The graph remains constant during one interval.

Clue 3: The graph crosses the y-axis at 8.

Clue 4: The graph is linear.

Clue 5: The graph is discontinuous.

Correct Answer: C
