Plotting Hand-Span Data

The chart to the right shows the hand-span measurements for several NFL football players.

Description of chart: The chart has two columns. The column on the right is labeled “Player” and contains the names of ten football players: Matt Barkley, Tyler Bray, Colby Cameron, Zac Dysert, Mike Glennon, Marrqueis Gray, Landry Jones, Collin Klein, E.J. Manuel and Ryan Nassib. The right column in the table is titled “Approximate Hand Span in Inches” and lists the hand spans of the players: ten and one-sixteenth, nine and one-fourth, nine and one-sixteenth, nine and one-eighth, nine and one-half, nine and seven-eighths, nine and one-eighth, nine and one-fourth, ten and one-half, and ten and one-sixteenth.

Complete a line plot to display this data.

Description of Line Plot: The number line for the line plot is labeled “Football Player Hand Span (Inches).” It extends from nine to eleven. It counts in increments of one-eighth by tick marks and one-fourth by numbers displayed. Four displayed numbers are missing from the number line. The pattern of numbers shown is as follows: nine, nine and one-fourth, nine and one-half, blank, ten, blank, blank, blank, eleven.

(text on slide) First, type numbers in the blanks to complete the number line.

Correct answers: nine and three-fourths, ten and one-fourth, ten and one-half, ten and three-fourths.

Now plot the data on the line plot by dragging the points to the appropriate locations along the number line.

Description of chart on the right of the screen: The chart has two columns.

Description of Line Plot: The number line for the line plot is labeled “Football Player Hand Span (Inches).” It extends from nine to eleven. It counts in increments of one-eighth by tick marks and one-fourth by numbers displayed.

Description of activity: Below the line plot are ten dots to be placed appropriately above the number line in the dot plot.

Correct Answer: The number line for the line plot is labeled “Football Player Hand Span (Inches).” It extends from nine to eleven. It counts in increments of one-eighth by tick marks and one-fourth by numbers displayed. One point is plotted above nine and one-sixteenth. Two points are plotted above nine and one-eighth. Two points are plotted above nine and one-fourth. One point is plotted above nine and one-half. One point is plotted above nine and seven-eighths. Two points are plotted above ten and one-sixteenth. One point is plotted above ten and one-half.
